Abstract

This study examines an integrated financial capability model among 464 undergraduate and postgraduate commerce and management students from 12 institutions in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Dharwad, Hubballi and Udupi, Karnataka. Perceived financial literacy, family financial socialisation and financial self-efficacy were modelled as antecedents of financial attitude, while financial attitude, self-control and financial self-efficacy were modelled as antecedents of financial management behaviour. Descriptive analysis, Welch’s independent-samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) were used. All six reflective constructs satisfied the reported reliability, convergent-validity and discriminant-validity criteria. Perceived financial literacy (β = 0.315), family financial socialisation (β = 0.277) and financial self-efficacy (β = 0.321) were positively associated with financial attitude. Financial attitude (β = 0.379), self-control (β = 0.301) and financial self-efficacy (β = 0.254) were positively associated with financial management behaviour. Financial attitude showed complementary partial mediation in the association between financial self-efficacy and financial management behaviour. The model explained 32.0% of financial attitude and 38.2% of financial management behaviour. Gender differences were not significant, while programme differences were significant only for financial self-efficacy. Because the design is cross-sectional, self-reported and purposive, the findings are interpreted as associations rather than causal or population-representative effects.
